Our Commissions

We are committed to church planting, rebirth, and revitalization of existing congregations by connecting and resourcing time, talent and treasures of all District congregations.

Stewardship is a lifestyle – a journey.
Stewardship is not just about managing money to facilitate God’s mission.

ANE’s District Ministry Commission is at the core of district ministry.  The District Ministry Commission is responsible for credentialing ministers – Licensing and Ordaining – through supervision of: ministry preparation and training; financial aid for ministry education; Readiness for Ministry testing and evaluation; mentoring; continuing education; ministerial ethics; and, in cooperation with the District Executive, general issues related to Pastoral Placement.

To encourage and network with congregations to proclaim the love and power of God, the Gospel of Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit through the witness of the faith and outreach to our communities and world.   We join hands with congregations to faithfully love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Luke 10:27).

The Nurture Commission shall provide opportunities and encouragement for Christian education within the congregations of the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the Brethren. The commission shall also facilitate, support and advocate for the spiritual, emotional, physical and relational health and vitality of the district’s congregations.

Congregations

Our family of congregations is located across the Northeast, including New York, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Delaware. If you are currently attending a Church of the Brethren, we encourage you to explore and connect with neighboring congregations. For those new to the area, we welcome you to find your church family among those listed.

Disaster Relief

The Atlantic Northeast District (ANE) partners with Brethren Disaster Ministries (BDM) to support disaster response efforts. Congregations are encouraged to send  volunteer groups, large or small, for a week at any of BDM's active sites. ANE's Disaster Response Coordinator is available to assist in coordinating and facilitating your group's participation.

Don Mitchell

Director, Church Development

Wow! How exciting it is for me to relate to and coordinate the work of the Commission on Church Development, overseeing, developing, and promoting the CCD’s church planting philosophy and strategy. Being a part of casting a District-wide vision for church growth, and congregational health and vitality is thrilling. I accept the Acts 1:8 challenge to commit to fulfill Jesus’ last spoken words to bring the gospel to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Jesus challenged the first church to be witnesses-personal participants in the world-wide mission of God. Will you join me in this mission?”

Don is a native of Chicago and graduated from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL where he met his wife Belita, former Moderator of the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference. Don and Belita resided in Southern California for 31 years, and moved to PA in 2003 when she pastored at Harrisburg First Church.  Belita passed away in 2024. Don has four adult children (one deceased) and four grandchildren.

An accomplished musician Don has traveled across the denomination on many Urban Peace Tours sponsored by the former Church of the Brethren Office of Witness

Ministry Investment Plan and overseeing maintenance of the property owned by ANE in Brooklyn, NY. As Director of Stewardship, these responsibilities have expanded to include overseeing the maintenance of all properties owned by the District and providing Stewardship education for ANE congregations.

In 2015, Kay completed the ACTS program and became ordained in the Atlantic Northeast District .  As an ordained minister, Kay assists with Pastoral placements and credentialling in addition to Stewardship responsibilities .  Kay uses music as a public ministry and a personal respite.
